Arnica is a remedy for sciatica due to over-exertion. The acute pains are followed by a sensation as if bruised.
If your pain returns every night at the same time and becomes totally unbearable. It may be relieved by gentle motion or warmth, it is aggravated by cold. Neuralgia without inflammation.
With severe pains at night and worse from exposure to cold or damp weather, there is numbness, pricking sensations and intense coldness especially in the toes. The patient feels restless and tingly.
Pain in left hip worse while sitting but relieved by walking or lying down. Feels as if the tendons in the hip are too short. Legs feel contracted. Painful jerks, feet feel as if asleep.
With hot inflammation, the pain comes on suddenly.
There is a neuritis, and the course of the nerve is sensitive; the pain is especially severe at night, the parts are sensitive to the touch, the least concussion or a draft of air aggravates. Severe lacerating pains coming on in the afternoon or evening; has to change position often; worse from motion, noise, shock or contact; cannot bear the clothing to touch him. Relieved by letting the limb hang down, warmth and the erect posture.
Bryonia has shooting pains worse from motion and relieved by hard pressure. May be better from lying on the affected side. Patient is nervous to move at all. Useful in rheumatic sciatica.
With pains in the sciatic nerve extending to to the knee and heel which is worse from any motion. It is aggravated by the cold with numbness and partial paralysis. The thigh might feel bound with iron bands or as though screwed in a vice, the muscles are tense and fixed. With symptoms experienced on the right hand side with tingling or pins and needles whilst walking. There may be constriction around the hip, the pains come and go suddenly. Symptoms are worse at night and in the cold or damp weather, there may be sticking and burning. It is hard to find a position without pain. Usually without swelling, this remedy works on new symptoms especially well.
Sudden, constant and intolerable right-sided sharp-shooting pains extending to knee, worse by motion; the patient must keep quiet.
With intense neuralgic pains along the nerve, and numbness. The whole trunk and the main branches seem affected, it is worse when lying down, worse from motion and better whiles sitting in a chair. The pains extend to the toes.
Lycopodium is sometimes most useful in chronic cases where there are fine burning or stinging pains, or tearing, drawing or jerking pains worse from rest. The lithic acid constitution will decide the remedy.
With lightening pain felt on the spinal cord with twitching and violent pains which mean you change position often. Pains shoot down into the foot, the limb is stiff or feels paralysed and cold.
Better when lying on the affected side and from the application of hot water. Constipation with a sedentary lifestyle.
This remedy typifies a sciatica due to venous stasis and is useful in the milder forms where there is a sense of fatigue and heaviness, flying attacks, aching in loins and hips. Uterine sciatica.
With muscular and ligament pains which can be tearing or burning and worse during rest and better during motion. There may be muscular twitching, constipation and back ache. This is the best remedy for the combination of lumbago and rheumatic sciatica where the fibrous sheath of the nerve is involved. May have arisen from being caught in wet weather or from lifting, wrenching and over-exertion. Relief comes from keeping warm.
This remedy also has shooting pains down the back, down the sciatic nerve on first moving or on rising after sitting; the patient is obliged to walk about constantly during the paroxysms of pain. The pains are felt most in the region of the knee. It is worse during damp or cold weather and from cold applications.
